Why green smoothies?
Green smoothies are a great way to get your raw green veggies in every day. They are not only easily digestible, but also rich in phytonutrients, enzymes, protein, minerals and antioxidants. You can combine them with fruit or other veggies for a savory flavor. Superfoods as well as protein powders can add more oomph, greater nutrition and taste.
Types of greens I use
It is important to develop your palate for a variety of greens in order to rotate them. I do not use the same greens more than once or twice a week. Here are the greens I’ve used over the years:
|Romaine Lettuce||Swiss Chard||Arugula||Parsley|
|Mixed Lettuce||Beet Greens||Radish Tops||Endive|
|Collard Greens||Cilantro||Lemon Balm||Basil|
Why Rotate Your Greens?
Nature has developed a built-in survival mechanism to keep plants safe, as green leafy plants contain small amounts of alkaloids. Alkaloids are toxic compounds that can create unwanted symptoms in people; however, small amounts of alkaloids can actually strengthen your immune system. Eating the same greens everyday can cause the alkaloids to build up in your system, which is not a good thing.
Too much of a good thing
Several years ago I had a smoothie with kale almost everyday during the summer. The right side of my face became numb. I also had a client who developed a slight paralysis in the muscles in her face after having spinach and swiss chard smoothies for breakfast everyday for four months. Another client developed hot flashes followed by a feeling of anxiety after she had been drinking smoothies with kale several times a week. These symptoms disappeared after we stopped consuming the same greens repeatedly.
Enjoying a variety of organic whole foods in your diet is important. Rotating foods is vital to obtain a diverse array of nutrients to keep you healthy and youthful. Remember, too much of a good thing may do you harm.
